What We Really Eat: Fruit Salad

The humble fruit salad disappeared from our table for a few years – we had simply forgotten about it! But we had an ‘aha’ moment this summer on one of those sweltering mid-thirties July-in-Montreal days, and remembered the juicy satisfaction of the perfect combination of fresh fruits with baguette and cheese. Aaah . . . just right in the high heat, and wonderfully easy on the cook. Instead of cranking up the stove, she only has to wash beautiful fruit in refreshingly cold water! Hurrah! This simple meal reminds one that food is beautiful and wonderful – as in, ‘full of wonder’. Really! Who makes those delicious foods grow anyway . . . ? (And a big thank you to the farmers, pickers, truck-drivers and grocery-store workers as well!)

So here is the recipe that refreshes, mixed fruit salad. (To make a more hearty meal out of it, we eat whole-grain bread with old cheddar beside.)

Mixed Fruit Salad

1 1/2 cups red grapes, rinsed

2 Macintosh apples, washed and diced

2-3 ripe peaches, sliced in randomly-sized pieces

2 bananas, peeled and sliced

Prepare ingredients in order of list (so your bananas do not turn brown) and toss in a large bowl. Serve in individual bowls, accompanied by a plate for bread and cheese. Enjoy! (serves three)
